For those fortunate enough not to know, the pain caused by a kidney stone is intense and will drive even the most reluctant patient to find a doctor to end their suffering. This was the situation Nestor faced last July, with an added twist. Nestor, like thousands of adults and children in Austin, was uninsured and therefore did not have his own doctor, which is when the Volunteer Healthcare Clinic (VHC) stepped in to help.
Nestor’s son, already a VHC patient who spoke highly of our care, referred his parents to VHC. They immediately began receiving much-needed medical treatment, starting with a Urologist referral for Nestor’s painful kidney stone. As it turned out, both Nestor and his wife, Maria, are diabetic, so they were enrolled in our Chronic Disease Management (CDM) clinic, which provides comprehensive care for uncontrolled diabetes. They reported their health was improving due to the quality medical services they received, including:
* Nurse & Physician Consultations
* Lab & Diagnostic Testing
* Medications/Pharmacy Services
* Specialty Care
* Case Management
* Diabetic Retinopathy Vision Screenings
* Monitoring Tools (glucometers & BP cuffs)
* Nutrition & Medication Counseling Services
* Prevention / Health Education
* Social Service Referrals
Before finding VHC, Nestor and Maria’s diabetes was unmanaged due to their being uninsured, which has potentially devastating health consequences. Thanks to VHC, Nestor had this to say:
“We are feeling so much better, and our blood sugar is now well controlled.”
They are grateful for all the medical care and support they received and want to thank everyone involved with VHC for making this possible, which is where YOU come in.
Please make a financial gift today so VHC can continue providing these critical medical services to underserved Austinites. Your support is truly an invaluable investment in the health of the Austin community, a gift that benefits everyone.
